Welcome to Italy Class

We are a Key Stage 3 Discoverer Class; we encourage the learners to engage through real life learning opportunities to make it purposeful for them with a clear structure and routine which is supported by our total communication environment. We provide a safe and stimulating learning environment for the individuals to thrive in and believe every minute of the day can be a learning opportunity and continuously set high expectations. We value the importance of regular wellbeing check-ins throughout the day and encourage the learners to use an appropriate strategy to self-regulate and talk to a familiar adult if they need to. We are an active and play-based learning class where we draw on early learning experience to enrich our broad and balanced curriculum. We demonstrate pride in our work and can't wait to show you all the things we get up to over the year.

Learning Showcase

Exciting moments from Italy Class will appear in this space, including any pictures or videos we take.  Please keep checking in, in order to see what the learners have been up to!

Autumn 2024

During Autumn 1 Italy Class explored the text My Monster and Me; they made predictions using sensory clues from the text. They then explored sensory experience to help them create adjective word banks and used these to make a character description. In Maths learners developed their understanding of number by counting forwards and backwards, comparing and representing numbers. In Science learners explored Sound, they had a wide range of experiences to visually explore how sound travels through vibrations and how this is impacts by travelling through solids, liquids and gases. In Geography learners investigated Brazil. They compared the Brazilian and English flags, music, food, clothing, sport and housing. In Careers learners explored a wide range of transport through engaging books and play.

During Autumn 2 Italy Class have explored the text When Jelly Had a Wobble; they made predictions about the text using images and sensory experiences before exploring and retelling the story using sensory props. Learners followed lots of different sets of instructions to help them identify the features before writing their own instructions to make jelly. In Maths learners were learning all about money, they explored coins, engaged in exchanges, matched coins and visual representations, counted in pennies and some learners added coins, all of these skills were practised in a role play shop. They also learnt about position and direction, they explored following position instructions, describing positions and following maps. In Science we continued our topic all about light and sound, this half term we focused on light. Learners how light travels and explored transparent, translucent and opaque objects and how light interacts with these objects. In History Italy Class learnt all about World War II; they compared images and recounts of WWII with the modern Ukraine war, they sorted pictures to identify that war impacts everyone (men, women, elderly and children), they also experienced an air raid siren and made bomb shelters. In careers they learnt all about bullying and friendship.

Spring 2025

During Spring 1 Italy Class have explored the text The Elephant Detectives; they made predictions about the text using images and sensory experiences before exploring and sequencing the story using sensory props, symbols and eventually using Colourful semantics to retell the story. In Maths learners explored measuring and comparing length and height, learners used a range of vocabulary to describe these measures, measured using non-standard units and some learners measured in cm using a ruler. Learners then explored colour and patterns, they identify primary colours and mixed them to make secondary colours. Learners learnt about how to change the shade of a colour and applied this knowledge when copying, continuing and creating repeating patterns. In Science learners explored states of matter; they tested the properties on solids, liquids and gases and then explored how we can change the state by applying heat or cooling. In Geography learners explored life in the Alps, they made ice mountains, role played skiing and compared life in the Alps to life in Rugby. In Careers they learnt all about personal hygiene, they practised lots of skills such as how to wash hair, brush teeth and wash hands.

During Spring 2 Italy Class explored the text Who Are You? They used this text to help them write autobiographies and inspired some fabulous cinquian poems. In Maths learners explore addition and subtraction; some learners explored the concepts "more" and "less" while others explore concrete and pictorial methods to complete calculations. They then explore shape, learners explored, selected, named and described 2D shapes. In Science learners explore Energy and Electricity, they explored a range of electrical devices and some learners used wires, bulbs, batteries and switches to make simple circuits. In History italy Class learnt about Vikings; they explored chronology by sorting images to past and present, they then compared Vikings to the modern day. Learners explored artefacts and used to clay to make replicas. In Careers learners explored a wide range of office skills including using a printer, using a shredder, using a stapler and a hold punch.
