Art and Design Curriculum Vision

 

At Brooke School, Art and Design will engage, inspire and challenge learners to create works of art, craft and design pieces as a means of personal expression that explores and celebrates learners’ ideas and records their experiences.

 

Learners will acquire the knowledge and skills to achieve their aims using a range of artistic tools and media, and will be able to critically analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others.

 

To accomplish this, we have planned a curriculum that builds practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge and promotes the connections between these sectors to allow learners to develop their own artistic identity.

 

Key Aims:

 

  • Learners will have the opportunity to engage in drawing, painting and sculpture.
  • Learners will develop and master a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
  • Learners will develop a vocabulary to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Learners will increase their knowledge of significant artists, craft makers and designers throughout history, both locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Learners will increase their knowledge of historical and cultural developments in art, craft and design.

 

From these aims we have identified five strands which run through our scheme of work:

  • Generating ideas
  • Using sketchbooks
  • Making skills (including formal elements)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating and analysing

 

Curriculum Design

 

The curriculum has units divided into four core areas, repeated in each year group. This provides clarity over knowledge and skills progression within the four areas. Students are given opportunities to develop mastery by revisiting core subject knowledge and applying that knowledge practically in a range of contexts with growing complexity.
