Phase 5

Throughout Phase 5 learners will be exposed to Phase 3 spellings along with Phase 4 consonant blends. This practice embeds the learners' knowledge and understanding of the phonemes along with constantly recapping prior learning and further embedding this. Alternative pronunciations and spellings for graphemes are introduced towards the end of the Phase 5 for example 'ea' as in tea, can be head and bread however sound differently in each word. Word and spelling knowledge will be worked on extensively in preparation for Phase 6. By the end of Phase 5 learners should have learnt the most frequent occurring grapheme- phoneme correspondences and should be able to apply these to read many words automatically.
