In Pear Class, our learners are on the Explorer Pathway designed specifically for learners with Complex Needs. We follow the informal curriculum that encourages each learner to master their skills through the development of independence, fluency, maintenance and generalisation.
Each learner has a personalised learning goal for each of our four curriculum areas; Communication and interaction, Cognition and learning (including Environmental Control Technology), Social, Emotional and Mental health, and Physical, Sensory and Independence.
Each term, we have a topic focus to ensure a breadth of engaging learning experiences, this term our topic is ‘Elmer’, with lots of sensory activities around the Elmer story linked to friendships, colours and elephants.

We explored the sensory experience of making different pancakes by looking, listening, smelling, feeling, and tasting different ingredients, pancakes and toppings. Through sensory stories like 'Croc's Cooking Day' and 'Pancake Day, Stancake day', we learned the steps of following a recipe, sorted toppings, and picked our favourites. In our sensory cooking session, we applied all of these skills in the Food Technology Room to mix, make, and explore real pancakes. This term for Book Week, we explored the sensory story of The Gruffalo.
